Book Shop

Hi, everyone, I would like to make everyone aware, that all of the books created by our late pillar of society, Mr. Bill Stockdale who we held in high esteem, and the committee of Leadgate And District Historical Society of which Bill was the President, passed over the mantle of “Leadgate And District Historical Society” to  Leadgatevillage.com

We now hold the copyright to these books and will endeavour to carry on with Bill’s good work by publishing more books in the series. You will find most of Bill’s books here in this Book Shop which are in digital format and can be bought and downloaded to your electronic device, whatever it may be. We also have some printed copies available for sale plus delivery. Please send enquiries to martinboyle137@gmail.com

The primary reason for this Book Shop project is to to raise funds for the Children of our village and outlying districts, and to inform the residents who want to be involved in this charitable enterprise, which is called “The Bill Stockdale Leadgate And District Historical Society”, the steps they need to take.

These funds will be used to enable us to, in time, bring back the “Childrens Seaside Trip” which was well patronised when the club, in its hey-day could afford it for its members, children.

This will not be the only reason for us raising funds through the Book Shop, we also want to give our support to the Four Churches within our village (Catholic, Church of England, Methodist and Salvation Army) to help raise necessary funds for them to help stay afloat throughout these hard times and dwindling congregations and there will be other projects no doubt that will need support.

I would like to see all of the residents getting involved with this project, may it be by helping with the fundraising or supporting the fundraising activities.

We have spoken to a couple of our Licensee’s within the village regarding fundraising nights within their establishments and the feedback has been 100%. We will endeavour to try and get more establishments and businesses etc.to help fund this worthy cause.

These fundraising nights will help them out, as well as our ability to raise funds. All of the other venues within the district will surely come on board as well.

We intend to keep all of the residents of our Leadgate Village and District up-to-date, so we have decided everything is to be open, transparent and above board. We intend to install a till register on our www.LeadgateVillage.com website which will show the total funds we receive after being processed.

We are creating a charitable organisation, namely ” The Bill Stockdale Leadgate And District Historical Society” set up to provide help and to raise money for those in need.

Any person interested in becoming a member/volunteer please email me at martinboyle137@gmail.com for more in-depth information. We will be posting information on our Facebook page to keep our residents (far and wide) up to date on what is happening.

Anyone with I.T knowledge regarding Website design who would like to get involved in that department would be truly welcomed.

Any donations will be gladly accepted.

“Leadgate Uncovered” Book One

We hope these little publications of the “Leadgate And District Historical Society” will inform and interest younger folk and remind those of us who are older, of earlier days.

“More of Leadgate Uncovered” Book Two

We do hope you will find this second little booklet has as much interest as the first.

“More of Leadgate Exposed” Book Three

Approaching Christmas 2001 and here is our third little booklet about Leadgate. We hope it will make a small but interesting Christmas gift.

The answers to the first quiz can be found inside, together with our new quiz No 2

“Leadgate Revealed” Book Four

This, the fourth booklet in the series contains another selection of nostalgic pictures of our village. We do hope you enjoy them.

“Leadgate and a few near neighbours” Book Five

This, our fifth book in the series has been printed by a different process to safeguard the quality of the old photographs we need to use.

For the first time, we introduce a few pictures of neighbouring areas which we believe you will enjoy.

“Around Leadgate” Book Six

Approaching Christmas and once again we have produced a booklet (our sixth in this series) about Leadgate and District.

“It’s Leadgate Again” Book Seven

This, the seventh book in our Leadgate Series is appearing later in the year than usual. We hope you will find it worth waiting for.

“Leadgate Encore” Book Eight

Welcome to the eighth book in the series. When the first book came out we did not know that there would even be the second one, but you continue to buy them and so they keep appearing.

However, we do not have a bottomless supply of pictures and if anyone can help by lending us pictures please do.

“Leadgate Once More” Book Nine

We hope this ninth book in the Leadgate Series will be produced in time to provide a small, stocking filling, Christmas present for your friends or yourself.

Some exciting pictures of past changes to Leadgate have come to light and are included in this edition. Many of the sporting and school groups should hopefully bring back happy memories.

“Au Revoir Leadgate” Book Ten

Welcome to the tenth and possibly the last Leadgate booklet in the series. When Book One was produced in December 2000, we had no idea it would lead as far as this and we thank you for your continuing support.

“Phoenix” Book Eleven

In producing this eleventh book in the series we are responding to many requests to “do another book”. However as we warned in Book Ten it became difficult to obtain different, suitable photographs of reproductive quality.

Never the less we have done our best to present a book, (rising like a Pheonix from the ashes), which we hope will both interest and entertain you and for this, we are indebted to a number of people, who have managed to unearth photographs.

“Leadgate Limited” Book Twelve

Because of your help here we are again with our twelfth book in this Leadgate series and in bringing it to you we make our ongoing appeal for photographs.

“Lucky Leadgate” Book Thirteen

In this little booklet, you will see the changes that have occurred regarding the shops in our village throughout the years.

“Leadgate Moments” Book Fourteen

Welcome to yet another booklet in the Leadgate Village Series. For its appearance, we are indebted to all who have supplied photographs particularly Beamish Museum.

“Leadgate Memories” Book Fifteen

Welcome to the fifteenth booklet in the Leadgate Village Series. So long as pictures keep turning up we shall endeavour to record the “History” of our village.

“Leadgate Swan Song” Book Sixteen

As the title implies, for many reasons, this is expected to be the last little booklet in this series. We have run out of suitable photographs, having used approximately 660 photo’s over the years.

“Leadgate almost Vintage” Book Seventeen

You may need to be over 40 years of age to be found in this book, though of course it is mainly concerned with places and things which actually happened in your parents/grandparents lifetimes around the village. Perhaps you should consider buying a copy to remind them of past memories and changes in Leadgate.

“Leadgate, A View From St. Ives”

Often I have looked from St. Ives to the North, to the “Hat and Feather Inn” and beyond, and in my mind’s eye, I picture this view as it may have appeared almost 2000 years ago.

Leadgate Volume One – Churches

Not so Much a Village More a Way of Life

During the months it took me to compile this book I have pestered the life out of people – especially the elderly, and for their help and co-operation I am much indebted. Also, too many other people of our village who have so freely given of their time tracing facts and family histories – many thanks.

In an age dominated by superstores, it is pleasing to recall a time when there was more of the personal touch. Shoppers were greeted by “Can I help you sir (or Madam?”). Biscuits came in tins, butter in barrels, sweets in jars and bacon was cut from a side.
